The Irish, debuting under new head coach Jeff Lee, posted a 16-25, 32-30, 25-22, 16-25, 15-7 win against the Eagles.
“No individual standouts in particular, just a bunch of kids playing their first match of the year while keeping their composure through the ups and downs of the match,” Lee wrote in a late-Tuesday email to the News-Times.
Waldport's match Wednesday at home against Coquille was canceled. The Irish visit non-league foe Taft at 6 p.m. on Friday in Lincoln City.
Boomers’ head coach Crystal Taylor Hinds said she saw several positives from her team in their 25-15, 24-26, 25-18, 25-13 loss to the Braves. She was particularly pleased with the play of sophomore outside hitter/setter Marlee Rozewski and junior hitter Sierra Ferguson.
“We had some athletes start to find their rhythm,” Taylor Hinds wrote in her post-match media report. “Marlee Rozewski is really starting to stand out as a force in the front row. Sierra Ferguson is beginning to trust herself and work on the net. We are seeing our back row digging those killer spikes teams have”
Toledo’s next scheduled match was a Thursday 2A-4 Sunset Conference contest at Coquille.
“Our team wants to go far this year and their determination and hard work is showing,” Taylor Hinds wrote. Further details from the Tuesday match were unavailable as of the News-Times sports’ deadline as the Boomers fell to 0-1 in league action, 1-2 overall.
No details were reported on Newport’s 25-19, 25-12, 25-16 loss at 4A-3 Oregon West Conference-foe Stayton. The Cubs fell to 0-1, 0-3 before they hosted Woodburn in a Thursday night league match.
