TOLEDO — Ryan Vargas, a 34-year-old South Albany High School graduate and former Linn-Benton Community College guard, last week accepted an offer to be the new head boys basketball coach at Toledo High School.

Vargas, who grew up in Jefferson, about five years ago established Clutch Time Hoops based in Albany, offering area youths traveling teams, individual private training sessions, open gym scrimmages and more. But when Bart Rothenberger, who coached the Boomers boys basketball team to an undefeated COVID-limited 2021 season, took an assistant principal/athletic director position at Alsea High School, leaving the Toledo boys hoops job open, Vargas leapt at the opportunity.
