ADAIR VILLAGE — The Taft High School baseball team’s run in the 3A state playoffs was a brief one thanks in no small part to Santiam Christian junior pitcher Kadon Haugen.

Haugen tossed a complete-game three-hitter, the Eagles played errorless defense behind him, and senior catcher Jadon Roth’s second inning double plated the game-winning tally May 25 as Santiam Christian earned a 3-1 victory over the Tigers in a first-round OSAA 3A playoff game.

The tough-luck defeat ended Taft’s season at 18-10 and came despite a nearly as dominating pitching performance by Tigers’ starter Kaden Hindman and reliever Baron Delameter. Hindman, a senior righty, surrendered all three Eagles runs in a three-inning stint. He allowed four hits and three walks to go with a pair of strikeouts.

Delameter went the rest of the way on the mound and held Santiam Christian scoreless during the final three frames on one hit and two walks and fanning two.

The Tigers matched Santiam Christian’s flawless defense, but managed just a walk, a Kai Bayer single, an Armando Fajardo double and a J.J. McCromick triple off Haugen, who fanned seven and threw 54 of his 81 pitches for strikes.

The Eagles took their first lead in the bottom of the opening frame after Hindman wiggled out of a no-out, bases loaded jam by allowing just a single run before Taft freshman outfielder McCmormick’s two-out triple in the top of the second tied it 1-1.

Roth smacked an RBI double with one away in the bottom of the second to give the Eagles a lead they wouldn’t relinquish before Ely Kennel came home on a wild pitch during the next at-bat for the game’s final tally.

Santiam Christian advanced to a May 27 quarterfinal at Brookings-Harbor, where the Eagles pulled off a mild 8-1 upset of the Bruins to move into the semifinal round. Santiam Christian (19-8), the 16-school bracket’s No. 5 seed was scheduled Tuesday to host ninth-seed Blanchet Catholic (19-5) in a semifinal matchup.

The winner of that game was slated Friday to face the winner of Tuesday’s other semifinal between Yamhill-Carlton and South Umpqua in the state title game Saturday at Volcanoes Stadium in Keizer.
