In a quartet of soccer matches played Monday, the Taft High School boys and girls teams earned wins to advance to the second round of the 3A/2A/1A-SD 2 playoffs, while both the Newport/Eddyville Charter teams closed their season with victories.

The Taft girls, who entered their first-round league playoff contest at Blanchett Catholic with just one victory in 12 regular season matches, played the Cavaliers to a scoreless draw through regulation and overtime before winning a shootout, 4-3. The win, which boosted the Tigers to 2-10-1 as they advanced to play a second-round contest Wednesday at Amity/Western Christian (9-3-1).

In boys soccer action Monday, Taft took down Yamhill-Carlton 2-0 at Voris Field in Lincoln City in a first round 3A/2A/1A-SD 2 playoff match. The Tigers (8-5-2) scored both their goals in the second half in advancing to a to play a second-round contest Wednesday at Amity/Western Christian (9-3-1).

In 4A-3 Oregon West Conference matches Monday evening to close the regular season, the Newport/Eddyville Charter boys team won a 5-1 match at Sweet Home, and the Cubs girls shutout the Huskies 4-0 at Morrow Field in Newport.

The Cubs boys finished 2-6-2, 5-7-2 after snapping a five-match winless streak. They begin postseason play tonight (Friday) with a 7 p.m. play-in match at Oregon City against Estacada.

The Newport/Eddyville girls halted their four-match losing streak with the win over Sweet Home, and capped the season at 4-8-0, 6-8-0. Their play-in match is slated for 2 p.m. MDT Saturday at Ontario.

No information from any of Monday’s matches were submitted to the media prior to the News-Times sports’ Wednesday morning deadline.
