NEWPORT— Regrouping at halftime was exactly what the Newport/Eddyville Charter girls soccer team needed Oct. 7 as the Cubs rallied to earn a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Stayton in a 4A-3 Oregon West Conference match at Morrow Field.
A Cubs turnover led to a breakaway goal for the Eagles near the halfway point of the first half, but Newport/Eddyville head coach Travis Leonard said his team, which played “tight” throughout the opening 40 minutes, regained its composure at intermission.
“A great team discussion at halftime seemed to calm things down, and the players identified what they needed to do and came out in the second half strong,” Leonard wrote in an email to the News-Times.
The Cubs tallied the equalizer when freshman Kianna Leonard played a ball in the air to sophomore Layla Newell, who sent a volley to the back of the net. Fewer than five minutes later, the Cubs took the lead for good when Newell’s “perfect” through ball found freshman Brisa Aguilar, who netted the eventual game-winner.
“From there, Stayton ramped up the pressure to try and equalize,” Coach Leonard wrote after the Cubs improved to 3-4-4 in league, 5-4-0 overall. “We were able to hold on the remaining 18 minutes or so for our third league win and our fifth win overall this season.”
Newport/Eddyville’s lone match this week is a scheduled Thursday league contest at fifth-ranked Woodburn (5-0-2, 5-0-3).
