Two grapplers from the co-op Siletz Valley/Eddyville Charter wrestling team — Tanner Clark and Xander Sweat — advanced to this week’s state wrestling tournament after competing June 17 at the 2A/1A-SD 1 district tournament at Nestucca High School in Cloverdale.

Clark was named the league’s Outstanding Wrestler after claiming the 170-pound district title. Clark, who takes a No. 2 seed into the state tournament today and Saturday at Sweet Home, defeated defending state champion Trenton Hutchinson in the district tournament final.

Siletz/Eddyville 152-pound wrestler Xander Sweat won twice by pin at districts and finished second, falling via pin in the finals to Dylan Bonfield of Colton. At 160 pounds, Joshua Johnson of Siletz placed fourth.

Boomers, Irish highlight all-league teams

Waldport junior Zak Holsey earned league Most Valuable Player accolades earlier this week when the 2A-4 Sunset Conference announced its boys basketball postseason awards and individual season honors.

Toledo senior Mason McAlpine, who claimed the league’s Defensive Player of the Year award, joined Holsey and Boomers classmate Jaxon Rozewski on the All-Sunset Conference first team.

Waldport heard coach Matt Brown, whose Irish completed the regular season 6-4, was tabbed as the league’s Coach of the Year.

Others receiving first-team honors included Gold Beach sophomore Gianni Altman, Myrtle Point/Powers senior Luke Nicholson and Bandon junior Trevor Angove.

Senior Kellen Howard and sophomore Gunner Rothenberger made second-team all-conference for Toledo, which won the league title with a perfect 8-0 mark in league games and overall. Juniors Levi Fruechte from Waldport and Coren Loper from Toledo were third-team all-league honorees.

Honorable mention selections from area schools included Waldport senior Graham Jones and freshman Haiden Hanks, and Toledo senior Markus Cross.
