NEWPORT — The Newport Resolution Run and Polar Bear Plunge kicks off the local running season with a bang at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 1, with a 5k walk/run, a 10k run and a half marathon, hosted by Ardor Adventures. All three races begin near Newport’s Rogue Ales & Spirits, 2320 SE Marine Drive. For a Google map of the startling line, visit

According to the race website,, both the 5k and 10k races are “flat and fast,” while the middle 10k of the half marathon features “challenging single-track trails.”

A new finish will greet those who complete the course this year in all three races — officials eliminated the final 1/3-mile sand dune finish from previous years. This year’s finish promises to have no more than 600 feet of sand. Race registrants will receive a finisher’s medal, post-race food, free beer, free race photos, chip timing, a digital certificate and more.

After crossing the finish line, racers have to option to dive into the nearby ocean to fulfill the plunge portion of the event. An awards ceremony will follow at Rogue Ales & Spirits.

The entry deadline for all three races is 11:59 p.m. Friday, and potential participants can sign up at the race website listed above. The cost to enter is $40 for the 5k, $45 for the 10k, and $60 for the half marathon.
