GOLD BEACH — Senior tight end Levi Schrock caught three touchdowns, and co-No. 7 Waldport beat Gold Beach 56-40 in a non-league 1A, 8-player Friday night football matchup.

Schrock hauled in scoring passes of 49, 27, and 75 yards as the Irish improved to 2-0. Wallowa, which shared a No. 7 ranking with the Irish in last week’s 1A, 8-player coaches poll, did not play.

“Coach (Jeff) Skirvin was pleased with the game, a result of hard work by the players,” Waldport assistant coach George Leonnig wrote in an email to the News-Times. “Gold Beach tested us as we look toward our tough schedule.”

Waldport sophomore running back Preston Segaline caught a pair of touchdown passes — one for 15 yards and another for 18 — senior running back Levi Fruechte scored on a 19-yard scoring run, and Irish senior quarterback Zak Holsey added an 85-yard scoring scamper.

Fruechte was also credited with a 62-yard punt that was downed at the Panther 1-yard line for the special teams’ play of the evening. The Waldport defense recorded a safety on Gold Beach’s next snap.

“Tough defense is part of this team’s M.O.,” Leonnig wrote.

The Irish are slated to return to action at 6 p.m. Thursday night when they host Days Creek, which fell 48-0 last weekend at third-ranked St. Paul.
