WALDPORT — During Tuesday afternoon’s three-school track and field meet with Oakland and Central Linn hosted by Waldport High School, Irish head coach William Bittick used the opportunity to give several of his student-athletes a chance to compete in unfamiliar events. So, maybe the Irish’s team finishes didn’t reflect their overall scoring potential, but several individual Waldport competitors made a splash.

With 180 team points, the Irish boys finished nine points shy of team champion Oakland and 10 points over Central Linn. Waldport received wins from seniors Levi Fruechte in the boys pole vault and Zak Holsey in the long jump. Fruechte added a second-place finish in the long jump, and Holsey was runner-up in the shot put.

Waldport sophomore Johnny Miller was second in the 200 meters and third in both the 100 and long jump, Waldport senior Ryan Pettyjohn was second in the 100 and third in the 200, and Irish junior Liam Morgan claimed silver in the 800 and 1,500 meters. Additionally, Valour Jones took second for Waldport in the discus, the Irish won the 400 relay with a team of Holsey, Miller, Pettyjohn and Fruechte, and freshman Milo Smith placed second in the 3,000.

The Waldport girls scored 35 points to finish behind both Oakland (257) and Central Linn (180). Senior Hadley McSharry won the girls triple jump, was second in the high jump and third in the long jump. Waldport sophomore Mia Dooley added a high jump win and an eighth-place finish in the discus.

Waldport, Newport and Toledo High School are scheduled Saturday to send athletes to the 11:30 a.m. Meet of Champions at Husky Field in Sweet Home.

Toledo hosts tri-meet

At Toledo, the Toledo boys edged Glide for the team title Tuesday in a three-team meet that included Oakridge.

Paced by junior Gunner Rothenberger’s wins in the 110-meter hurdles, the 300 hurdles and high jump, the Boomer boys tallied 132 points, while Glide finished with 124 and Oakridge scored 15.

Sophomore Cooper Rothenberger scored individual wins for Toledo in the shot put and javelin, Boomer sophomore Rickey Plummer won the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 6 inches, senior Reece Smith won the 100, and Toledo junior Zachary Tucker claimed the triple jump with a personal-best distance of 27-11 ½.

Glide won the girls event with 114 points, Toledo was second with 80 and Oakridge followed at 33.

The usual suspects — senior Klaira Flatt and juniors Tayla Stevenson and Avery Tyler — led the Boomer girls’ effort. Flatt won the 100 hurdles, the long jump and triple jump, Stevenson sprinted to wins in the 100 and 200, and Tyler finished runner-up in the 200 and claimed bronze in the javelin.
