EDDYVILLE — The Eddyville Charter girls basketball team went more than two weeks without a game during an extended holiday season break. But those 16 days without game competition did little to halt the Eagles’ momentum.

On Tuesday night, Eddyville showed few signs of rust in rolling to a 56-9 defeat of rival Siletz Valley in a 1A-3 Mountain West League game.

Junior guard Rylee Russell and sophomore post/forward Kendall Choat led a furious Eagles attack out of the gate. Russell scored nine in the first quarter, and Choat added eight more as Eddyville sped to a 28-2 and never looked back. Russell finished with a game-high 15 points, Choat totaled 14 points, and nine Eagles found their way into the scoring column.

Eddyville’s stifling defense yielded just four Warrior baskets from the field on the evening as the Eagles boosted their record to 3-0 in league games, 9-1 overall. The Eagles were scheduled to host Crow in a Mountain West League game Thursday before returning home Tuesday to meet Triangle Lake.

Neva Hamel scored four to lead Siletz Valley, which slipped to 1-2 in league, 2-4 overall. The Warriors were slated to hit the road Thursday for a league game at Triangle Lake.

At Lincoln City, the 10th-ranked Tigers won their fifth straight game Tuesday in a one-sided, non-league 3A contest.

“Our team has played extremely well this first part of the season, but ultimately winning non-league games doesn't really matter, nor does your record for non-league,” Taft head coach Jake Tolan wrote in an email to News-Times staff. “What matters is using those games and experiences to get better as a team, and I think my girls have done a great job of improving each time they take the court.”

Junior guard/wing Brooklyn Mangold sparked a Tiger first quarter onslaught with a pair of early 3-pointers as Taft took an 18-6 lead into the second quarter behind a full-court press on defense.

Taft senior post/forward Chloe Peterson led all scorers with 12 points, while Lily Hatton and Sienna Lillebo tallied nine apiece for the Tigers, who improved to 10-3.

“We played a good game, but there are still many things our team can improve on,” Tolan wrote. “We have a very difficult game coming up this Saturday against 3A Creswell, and then league play begins next week with games against Rainier and Clatskanie.”

Makayla Tuiolemotu and Lexie Braxling scored six points apiece to lead the Cheesemakers.
