STAYTON — The ninth-ranked Newport High School boys soccer team didn’t visit the top-ranked team in 4A on Tuesday looking for anything other than a victory. However, the Cubs and head coach Ollie Richardson left with a good measure of satisfaction after gutting out a 1-1- draw with Oregon West Conference-powerhouse Stayton.

“The players are excited because we outplayed and outhustled No. 1 and undefeated Stayton on their home turf,” Richardson wrote in a Tuesday evening text message to News-Times staff after Newport improved to 1-2-1 in conference, 4-2-2 overall. “We left everything on the field, and played inspired, with passion and heart.”
