PHILOMATH — Senior James Lackey was the top finisher for the Newport High School boys cross-country team Oct. 9 at the 5,000-meter Paul Mariman Invitational meet at Philomath High School.

Lackey completed the course in 17 minutes, 21.40 seconds to earn an 11th-place individual finish in leading the Cubs boys to seventh in the 19-team standings. Lackey’s senior teammate Sam Laurel was 22nd with a time of 18:02.50.

Siuslaw dominated in winning the boys team title with 35 points. Philomath was second with 91, followed by Cottage Grove with 117, Bandon at 120 and Sisters with 217.

Senior Kaden Hindman was the top finisher for the Taft boys, who collected 420 points. Hindman placed 61st overall by clocking in at 19:19.50.

The Waldport boys team scored 532 points, and were led by junior Liam Morgan, who crossed the finish line in 21:26.20, good for 106th place.

Senior Aliya Larsen paced the Cubs to a sixth-place team finish by taking third in the girls race. Larsen finished in 20:02.20, while individual medalist Jennifer Tsai from Marist broke the tape in 19:24.90 and runner-up Rylee Colton from Siuslaw, who finished in 19:47.70

Newport had 206 points, while team champion Marist tallied 44.

The Taft girls team scored 253 points. The Tigers were led by junior Makaia Kessigner, who ran a 21:19.90 to finish in 16th place.

Newport is scheduled to race Friday at the West Coast Classic at Alderbrook Golf Course in Tillamook. Taft and Waldport are slated to return to competition Oct. 22 at the Olalla Valley Golf Course meet.
