TOLEDO — The Newport High School boys cross country team did a little showing off Friday morning, Oct. 22, in all but coasting to the team championship at the Olalla Valley Golf Course meet, the final tune up for area teams prior to postseason competitions.

The Cubs boys claimed the top-4 individual finishes and tallied 18 points. They were followed by Philomath in second with 53 points, Taft in third with 61 and Waldport posting 100 points.

Philomath claimed the girls team title with 21 points, Newport, paced by senior Aliya Larsen’s second-place individual finish, was second with 54, and Taft scored 64.

The meet began about 45 minutes prior to its initially scheduled start and saw the boys and girls race the 5,000-meter course at the same time due to a scheduling conflict for Philomath athletes.

In the boys competition, Newport senior Sam Laurel broke the tape in 17 minutes, 13 seconds, nine seconds ahead of classmate and runner-up James Lackey. Cubs freshman Finn Collson finished third, more than a minute off Laurel’s pace, and freshman Noah Larsen from Newport was fourth in 18:22. The Cubs’ final scoring competitor was senior Christian Olivas, who was eighth in the 28-runner event with a time of 19:49.

Senior Kaden Hindman was the top finisher for the Taft boys, crossing the line in 19:11 for a seventh-place finish. Waldport received a 15th place from senior Liam Morgan, and a 16th from sophomore Jacob Gainer.

Philomath freshman Adele Beckstead edged Aliya Larsen by five seconds to claim girls individual medalist honors with a time of 20:09. Philomath harriers Ingrid Hellesto took third and Kaeleigh Houchin was fourth before Taft junior Makaia Kessinger grabbed fifth in 21:21.

Iris Donovan was Waldport’s lone girls competitor, and finished in 14th, and Toledo freshman Kora Pettis was 22nd.

Eddyville Charter, Taft, Toledo and Waldport are scheduled to compete Thursday afternoon, Oct. 28, in the 3A/2A/1A-SD 2 Championships at Cheadle Lake Park in Lebanon. Newport races Thursday afternoon in the 4A-3 Oregon West Conference Championships at Lane Community College in Eugene.
