ADIAR VILLAGE — Junior Makaia Kessinger led the Taft High School girls to the team championship Sept. 22 when the Tigers competed at the Santiam Christian Invitational cross-country meet.

Kessinger completed the 5,000-meter course in 22 minutes, 44.14 seconds to win individual medalist honors as the Tigers, one of two girls scoring teams at the event, tallied 23 points to runner-up Santiam Christian’s 32.

Waldport junior Iris Donovan placed fourth with a time of 25:38.88, while Taft freshmen Alexandra Hernandez (sixth) and Ximena Sanchez (ninth) also posted top-10 finishes for the Tigers. Taft sophomore Yanelli Hermosillo-Carrasco was 12th, Tiger senior Kaydince Beach finished 17th and Waldport senior Joelle Winn crossed the finish in 25th place.

Eddyville Charter’s top finisher in the girls race was Abbegale Schneider, who placed 28th by finishing in 37:00.01.

Taft was fourth behind Santiam Christian, Willamina and Jefferson, and Waldport placed seventh in the boys team standings. The Tigers’ top individual was senior Kaden Hindman, who place 17th individually with a time of 20:20.95. Waldport junior Liam Morgan finished in 25th place, crossing the line in 21:17.56.

Taft at Champs Invite

At Lebanon, Kessinger earned another top-20 finish Sept. 24 in pacing Taft’s harriers at the Champs Invitational meet at Cheadle Lake Park.

Kessinger clocked in at 21:17.07 to lead the Tiger girls contingent. Kessinger’s teammate Hernandez was 55th, and freshman Jaquelyn Cortez placed 86th. The Taft girls scored 233 points and finished 11th of 15 scoring teams.

Hindman was the fastest Taft runner in the boys competition. He finished in 19:44.812 to take 37th place. The Tigers boys were 13th in the team standings.
