Humans are members of the most intelligent species on Earth. So why are many humans so stupid as to deny climate change, so egotistical as to refuse to protect others by wearing a mask, and so prejudiced as not to respect humans of other races?
The answer in each case lies in part in the limits of our perceptual abilities. The immediate world around us is all we can see, so unless it is being ravaged by the weather, talk of climate change seems unreal.
We actually feel only our own feelings, not those of other people, so we tend to act on how we are feeling, rather than how others feel. We see people of other races as obviously different from us, so it takes work to see them as fellow humans.
This is not an excuse. It is merely a partial explanation.
