I would like to thank Newport Mayor Dean Sawyer for the forethought to ask for and secure an extra $10,000 to the fireworks budget this year. This show was the “blast from the past” — our community needed to kick start a good summer and return to life as we knew it. Knowing the pandemic has affected our lives negatively on many levels, his intuition of a party proved correct, as our community desperately needed a sense of normalcy.

I am also grateful to our city council for supporting and approving the mayor's idea. The mayor also spearheaded a campaign to insure our beaches were cleaned up after the Fourth of July, as last year the beaches were literally covered with pickup loads of visitors’ trash that caused great concern. He contacted the city, the Nye Neighborhood Association, and Thompson Sanitary to pitch in and clean up our beaches this year.

Thank you, Mayor Sawyer, for your continued leadership.
