I would like to thank Mayor Dean Sawyer for all the hard work he has been doing lately for the city. He invited Sen. Jeff Merkley to town for a tour of the Big Creek Dams and the senator came with staff members. Mayor Sawyer knows the importance of having the senator’s support as federal money will be needed as we can’t afford the $80 million price tag for the dam.

The mayor worked hard with Rep. David Gomberg to secure $14 million for the dam project. Newport has never been awarded this amount of funding from the state. Mayor Sawyer knows the taxpayers here can’t afford the huge price tag on a new dam, but he keeps working to find funding for it.

Mayor Sawyer also supported the creation of the Oregon Coast Art Bus project that the Newport Visual Arts Center recently kicked off. He even facilitated a large donation of art supplies for the project.

Thank you, Mayor Sawyer, for your hard work for Newport.
