I like, generally agree with and support all three of our incumbent Lincoln County commissioners. But other than imposing a temporary moratorium on new, short-term vacation rental home licenses, they botched the issue badly, as evidenced by the large margin by which voters passed a five-year phase out of these disruptive mini-motels in otherwise quiet residential neighborhoods in the unincorporated county.
This victory came even though proponents of Measure 21-203 were outspent roughly 10-1 by Meredith Lodging and the rest of the short-term vacation rental industry — another indication of severe voter disdain for loud party houses, illegal parking, overburdened septic systems and the creation of a housing market that benefits out-of-county investors and second-home owners to the detriment of local, working people who need homes.
Meredith and Via Oregon lied their way through the campaign, grossly exaggerating the economic impacts of 21-203. I doubt their sleazebag tactics will stop. It won't be surprising if they sue to protect their cash cow and thwart the voters.
Lincoln County voters have spoken, and the commissioners must listen well. Kaety, Claire and Doug — this means you. Put aside your doubts, implement the new voter-approved law without delay and vigorously defend the will of the voters in court if necessary.
