Thanks to all who contributed to the most wonderful Agate Beach Surf Classic this past weekend: sponsors, officials, fans, and surfers! The days couldn't have been more perfect. The livestream and announcers' patter ranked second to none.

My son has relocated to Oregon and took the plunge. This was the first time I'd actually seen him ride the waves in a contest. The view from Yaquina Head has spoiled me forever.

Surfers — at least the ones at this contest — are a rare type of athlete. There is competition, to be sure, but at the heart of it is the understanding that waves will rule the day. All any surfer can do is his or her best with what nature serves. I marveled at the camaraderie and humility among the competitors — refreshing in the too-often cutthroat world of sports competition.

Huge thanks to everyone involved. This is yet another example of what makes our community great.
