Richard Lee Russell

Rick was born August 25, 1946 to Alvin and Dorothy (Jeffryes) Russell in Oakland, Nebraska. He grew up in the Caldwell, Idaho area and graduated from Middleton High School. He was a 4 year star athlete in track and field, football (senior captain) and wrestling (2-time state champion). He married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn Blackburn in 1965 and they were blessed with two sons. After suffering a wrestling injury he transferred to Arlington California to finish his college years with a teaching degree and a Theology degree that began a lifetime of serving the Lord in man churches in Idaho and Oregon. He gave his last sermon December 2, 2021 at his home church Sacred Ground Baptist Church in Siletz Oregon.

Rick’s life verse was found in Isaiah 61, “The spirit is upon me because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor. Rick touched people’s lives: and helping people was his passion. As the pastor his goal was to lead them to the saving grace and the love of Jesus. As a counselor he tried to help them find peace from whatever burdens they were dealing with. As a coach he helped kids become the best man or women they were intended to be. He never saw a challenge he wasn’t ready to face or come out a victor. He hated to see people in pain when he knew how to lead them to find victory.

In 1986 he married Sherry Reed and became a stepfather to her two children, who he loved as his own. We moved to Siletz in 2007 so he could be the principal of the Mid-Coast Christian School in Toledo. He was the interim pastor for the Logsden Neighborhood Church in Siletz, which later changed the name to Sacred Ground Baptist Church. He was also the Newport wrestling coach for several years and then helped Toledo High School restart their wrestling program.

He leaves behind so many loved ones who look forward to seeing him again, and then for eternity. He is survived by his wife, Sherry Russell, sons Daniel Shannon Russell (Joy Lammert) and Joseph Lee Russell (Sadie Miles), step children Trisha and Joel Reed, grandchildren Ryan Jeffryes Russell (Christina Lee) Sarah Joy Russell-Breaux (Smith Breaux) Daniella Shannon Russell, Hannah, Noel Russell and Taft John Russell. Peter Lee Reed, Kalayli Marie Reed and Kiara Michelle Reed and his brother Charles Russell and sisters Alva Bequeath, Monie Watson and Mary Jones and Teri Ellis.

Rick was a proud father and grandpa. His strength and wisdom will be greatly missed.
