Margaret Ann “Peggy” (Simpson) Olson

Margaret “Peggy” Olson passed on October 23 peacefully with her children by her side. She was 84.

Peggy was born in Olympia Washington to Fred and Evelyn Simpson. She spent her childhood in Newport Oregon where her family lived on the waterfront running the historic fern plant. After high school, Peggy attended Knapp Business College in Tacoma, WA returning to Newport after graduation to work in the Georgia Pacific business office.

Peggy married John H. Olson in 1962. They had two children, Sheryl and John. The family moved from Newport to Savannah, GA in 1971 after John accepted a promotion with Georgia Pacific. Peggy worked as a Kelly Girl doing clerical services for Savannah Sugar Company. The family returned to Oregon in 1973 landing in Gold Beach.

Peggy went to work for Curry County in the tax department in 1974 working part time until accepting a full-time position with the accounting department. She was promoted serving as payroll officer until her retirement in 1999. She continued work with the county filling in in many of the departments after her retirement before taking the final retirement leap in 2003.

Peggy was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching the sporting events of her kids and grandkids. She enjoyed traveling with her family with most memorable trips to Australia, Israel, and Hawaii. Peggy was an enthusiastic exerciser as a member of Slimnastics and Jazzercise for many years. She was involved in many charitable organizations such as the Hospice Warehouse, Snack Pack Program, RSVP, Curry County Historical Society and was a founding member in the creation of the holiday bazaar kids mall. She was an active member of the St. Matthews Episcopal Church also serving as bookkeeper and alter guild member. She enjoyed many community events with friends.

Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, husband John and sister Geraldine York. She is survived by her sisters Amy Cline (Newport) and Bette Wheatly (Medford), daughter and son in law Sheryl and Randy McDonald (Gold Beach), son John (North Bend), grandsons Devin Olson (North Bend), Colton Olson (Bend), Jordan McDonald (Dallas), Mitchell McDonald (Gold Beach), daughter in law Rachael McDonald and great granddaughters Leah and Sophia (Gold Beach) along with many nieces and nephews.
