John Edwin Vandiver, 74, passed away on March 7th, 2023, at Samaritan Evergreen Hospice in Albany, OR after a short illness. His daughter Kristen was by his side.
John was born on June 9th, 1948, to Edwin and Vivian (Stott) Vandiver in Fresno, California. His mother would take him to kindergarten classes on horseback. At 18, after graduation from Fresno High School, he enlisted in the Navy and served for four years stationed on Guam and the aircraft carrier Ranger.
After his service, John moved to Oregon, where he enjoyed sailing and riding motorcycles. He worked jobs in construction, chemistry for Georgia-Pacific, and water treatment for the cities of Corvallis and Newport. Eventually, he settled on the coast where his daughter was born and raised. John lived much of his life in Newport where he loved racing his boat on Yaquina Bay and had a decades-long career in water treatment for the city.
In 2017, John left Newport to live with family in Silverton, OR. He never stopped missing the ocean. At his request, no funeral service will be held.
