WALDPORT — During the Thursday, June 10, meeting of the Waldport City Council, Mayor Greg Holland read a proclamation that designated the month of June as LGBTQIA+ Pride month in the city.

“The city of Waldport commits to advocate for protections for all LGBTQIA+ individuals to make our city a place where all people, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression are treated with dignity and respect,” Holland read from the proclamation.

President Bill Clinton declared June as “Gay & Lesbian Pride Month” in June 2000 in commemoration of the June 28, 1969 Stonewall Uprising, and president Barack Obama updated that commemoration in 2009, and renamed it as “Lesbian, Gay Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month.”

“The city of Waldport stands with the LGBTQIA+ community in the struggle to ensure equal treatment for all and to defend and advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights as human rights,” reads the proclamation.
