The Newport City Council is seeking applications from residents interested in filling a vacancy on the council. The vacancy was created by the resignation of former city councilor Aaron Collett, who recently accepted the position of Newport’s city engineer. The selected applicant will fill the remainder of Collett’s term, which will expire Jan. 3, 2023.

Applicants must be qualified electors who have resided within the city limits for at least one year immediately prior to appointment. The application deadline is Nov. 3, by 3 p.m.

The city council will conduct interviews with the applicants at a special meeting on Nov. 8. An appointment to the empty seat is will be made at the council’s regular meeting on Nov. 15.

Anyone interested in applying to fill this vacancy should apply using the city’s committee application, which can be found on the city website at; click on “City;” then on “Committees;” and then on “Application for Committee/Commission.” The completed form can be submitted electronically.
