Newport bagged a $6 million grant to refurbish the gateway to an iconic lighthouse at Yaquina Head.
The award by the Federal Highway Administration was revealed to city officials Jan. 10, more than a year after the proposal was submitted. The project “to improve access to the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area” will make a number of improvements on U.S. Bureau of Land Management and city of Newport property, including a new, shared-use path on Highway 101, pedestrian improvements, ravine bridges, sidewalks, a transit stop and other features.
“This is good news and something that has been a wish for the community for a long, long time,” said Newport City Manager Spenser Nebel, who credited Community Development Manager Derek Tokos for writing the request. “This is the fruit of those labors.”
Tokos called the award “a big gift,” noting the city applied for the grant unsuccessfully in the past. He said several agency changes coincided with a large federal infrastructure package, “aligning the stars.”
The project is fully funded, and no matching funds will be required from the city, Nebel stated.
