After three months running the Yachats and Waldport post offices unofficially, Chanda Kowitz stepped into the role of postmaster for the Yachats office on Jan. 1, six months after the previous postmaster retired.

Kowitz’s responsibilities as postmaster will primarily be serving as supervisor, overseeing operations at the office and staff there. She’s spent that last three months serving in that role behind the scenes, now officially stepping into the position of Yachats postmaster as of the start of the month.

“I’m really grateful for this opportunity and excited to work with people,” Kowitz said. “I know I have a lot to learn, but I have a great support system within the office and beyond.”

Kowitz is originally from Waldport, but now lives in Yachats with her family. She started as a contracted cleaner for the Waldport post office in 2018 before she eventually applied for a clerk position there, starting her work for the postal service in 2020 and working her way up to now lead a local office.

Now that she’s taken charge, Kowitz hopes to get the Yachats office fully staffed as soon as possible and then hopes to free up unused post office boxes at the site. Kowitz said that once locks are changed, she expects many boxes will open up for customers in Yachats.
