The Newport Fire Department issued a temporary ban Tuesday for all backyard debris burning for the city of Newport and the Newport Rural Fire Protection District.

The ban will last until further notice and was put in place due to a combination of high winds and low humidity in the forecast, creating potentially hazardous conditions for the next few days. The ban will be lifted when the weather changes and higher levels of humidity return.

The closure will help reduce the potential for fire spread during this time of the year when seasonal wildland fire crews are not yet in place.

For more information on the ban, call the Newport Fire Department at 541-265-9461.
