NEWPORT — In an effort to recognize outstanding student athletes from Lincoln County School District schools who played Season 2 high school sports during the abbreviated season in March and early April, administrators and coaches elected 51 youths to its All-Lincoln County School District teams.

“Our athletes began workouts to prepare for the season in October of 2020 and did not have their first Season 2 contest until March. We are proud of their academic and athletic dedication during this adversity and are excited to honor our Season 2 athletes with in-district recognition this year,” district Athletic Director Majalise Tolan wrote in a news release.

Because the season, usually played during the fall, was limited to six weeks of interscholastic competition starting in early March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the district’s volleyball, football and boys and girls soccer and cross country teams were unable to compete in their traditional leagues. In turn, LCSD schools scheduled the majority of their competitions against each other, and the district took up the task of celebrating its exceptional athletes in the absence of traditional all-district and all-state teams with their own All-LCSD teams.

“When the Lincoln County School District (Taft, Newport, Waldport and Toledo high schools) made the decision to participate close to home for Season 2 this year due to COVID-19, they knew that their student athletes’ recognition for their hard work and dedication to their time in the program and athletic accomplishments could not be forgotten,” Tolan wrote. “Collectively, the four high schools determined in a year like no other to honor the accomplished Season 2 athletes in the Lincoln County School District.”

The district’s standout team performance from Season 2 came via the Newport High School volleyball program. The Cubs marched their way through their competition to post a perfect 10-0 record. Though Newport fielded only a six-player varsity team, it placed juniors Stella Barber and Rachel Smith on the All-LCSD Volleyball Team. Barber, an outside hitter/middle blocker, led the Cubs with an average of 17 kills and five aces per match. Smith was a cornerstone of the Newport volleyball team at middle blocker.

Senior Kylie Burk and junior Charity Smith made the all-district team in volleyball from Waldport, and were joined by Taft junior Cameron Fisher and sophomore Natalie Gates.

Toledo junior Klaira Flatt wrapped up a stellar season by earning recognition from the school district in two sports. Flatt, who placed 27th on April 10 at the season ending Spring 2021 3A/2A/1A State Cross-County Championships in Lebanon, earned a spot on the all-district girls cross-country team and also made the volleyball team as a setter/outside hitter.

Newport junior harrier Aliya Larsen posted the school district’s best individual finish at state cross-country competitions last weekend, earning a sixth-place finish in the girls race at the Oregon 4A State Championships at Marist High School in Eugene. She and Flatt were joined on the all-district girls cross-country team by Toledo sophomore Makaia Kessinger and senior Claira Tolan, who posted a personal-best time by more than a minute at the state meet in Lebanon.

Males to receive all-district recognition in cross country included Waldport senior Lucas Forshee, Newport junior James Lackey, Taft junior Brayan Mateo-Perez and sophomore teammate Cooper Fitch, all state meet participants.

The 11-player All-LCSD girls’ soccer team is led by Taft leading scorer Avery Nightengale, a senior forward/midfiedler, and junior teammate Chloe Peterson. Newport seniors Kali Crawford and Jillian Thompson were two of Newport’s six athletes on the girls’ soccer all-district team. Crawford scored seven goals in eight matches this season.

Juniors Aidan Pierias and Ulises Gomez-Garcia and senior Bryan Velazquez-Olivera from Newport led a five-Cub contingent on the all-district boys soccer team, while high-powered goal scorers in Taft seniors William Calderon and Jose Flores were two of five Tigers to make the all-district boys soccer team.

In football, a rising Waldport program that finished on a four-game winning streak to close the season 4-1 placed two juniors and a senior on the all-district team. Junior quarterback/safety Zak Holsey threw for 529 yards and rushed for another 672 to lead the Irish all-district honors. He’s joined on all-district squad by Waldport junior receiver/safety Levi Schrock and senior Jeff Burton, who racked up 279 all-purpose yards on the season.

Toledo senior quarterback Jaxon Rozewski, who earlier this school year signed a letter of intent to compete next fall at Western Oregon University, is an all-district selection along with teammates Gunner Rothenberger, Mason McAlpine, Bubba Barnhart and Markus Cross.

Taft is represented on the all-district football team by senior wide receiver/defensive back Fco Ramos and junior wide receiver/defensive back Kaden Hindman, while Newport sophomore Markus Everitt, senior Cole Willis, junior Kaden Bruns and senior Mitchell Johnson earned all-district honors for the Cubs.
