“First Steps” is a 10-week program designed to break the barriers that prevent people from making healthy lifestyle changes. Brenda Luntzel, a fitness specialist at the Newport Recreation Center, said barriers can be physical like being overweight or being in pain; emotional such as not feeling comfortable in a gym or wearing a swimsuit; and mental such as social anxiety over not knowing how to use the equipment, feeling out of place or self-conscious, not knowing what type of exercise to do or how far to push yourself, or feeling like it’s an impossible task.
