Mike Szumski shows the load of tires and other debris — a total of 1,085 pounds — that he and fellow volunteer Ken Sund recently removed from the Siletz River using their canoes.

Volunteers Ken Sund and Mike Szumski spent a recent Sunday floating their canoes down the Siletz River from Jack Morgan Park to Strome Park, searching for old tires and other large debris tossed into the river.

“The low water levels make this the perfect time of the year to find tires and other pieces of large trash at the bottom of the river,” said trip organizer Ken Sund.
