A sure sign that Christmas is approaching is the presence of Salvation Army bell ringers at the entrances to some local businesses. Starla Spangler was welcoming shoppers at the Newport Fred Meyer on Black Friday, arguably the busiest shopping day of the year. The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign, which has been ongoing since the 1890s, kicks off each Thanksgiving weekend and is a way for people to donate to those less fortunate in the community.
