Joseph Wellons, known by many locals as “Toad,” is painting a mural on the concrete wall beneath the Yaquina Art Association (YAA) Gallery at the Nye Beach turnaround in Newport. He is a member of YAA and has taught colored pencil classes for the past five years. YAA president Ken Hartwell said the organization supplied all the needed materials for Wellons, who has spent around 90 hours on the mural so far and needs a couple more days of dry weather to finish his artwork. People visiting the Yaquina Art Association Gallery, located at 789 NW Beach Drive in Newport, will find a variety of work by local artists. The gallery is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day.
