Newport Symphony Orchestra violinist Alistair Kok and his Trio Musicorum Medicorum will be performing in a free Mother’s Day Concert this Sunday at Atonement Lutheran Church.

Newport Symphony Orchestra violinist Alistair Kok and his Trio Musicorum Medicorum will be presenting a free community Mother’s Day Chamber Concert Sunday afternoon, May 8, at 2 p.m. at Atonement Lutheran Church, located at 2315 North Coast Highway in Newport. Also on the program is the McKay High School Chamber Orchestra from Salem.

Trio Musicorum Medicorum formed in Portland in August of 2015 and regularly performs chamber music concerts and recitals in and throughout Portland, Newport, and the surrounding areas. Kok holds degrees from Virginia Tech, Ohio State University College of Dentistry and the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Mass. He has performed professionally with orchestras and chamber ensembles throughout New England, Ohio and Virginia. Since moving to Portland in June 2015, he has joined the Newport Symphony Orchestra violin section.

Pianist Andrew Bonner has degrees in music from Harvard and Brandeis University. He studied piano at the New England Conservatory of Music, and was a freelance musician in Boston for 20 years. He is currently a naturopath.

Cellist Rebecca Reese studied cello at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Denver. She taught cello at the University of Alaska and then moved on to Los Angeles, where she worked as a freelance musician for many years. She performed in many classical orchestras and chamber music groups, as well as playing studio-recorded background music for TV and movies such as Raiders of the Lost Ark, Ghost Busters, the Color Purple, The Natural and Star Trek III, to name a few. She is currently a physician with a practice in cranial osteopathy and homeopathy.

The McKay Chamber Orchestra is an audition-only orchestra at McKay High School in Salem. These 12 talented students rehearse both during and outside of the school day and have been recognized as one of the best high school orchestras in the state. Their program includes Mozart Divertimento No. 1 in D K. 136 Movement. 1, Shostakovich String Quartet 8 Movements. 1 & 2, and Hovhaness Psalm and Fugue.

This special chamber concert is a presentation of the Oregon Coast Youth Symphony Festival, which recently held its fourth annual event in Newport. The festival will return next April for its fifth season. For more information about the festival go to www.youthsymphonyfestival.org.

Donations will be accepted this Sunday to support the festival, and attendees are asked to wear a mask in the church sanctuary.

The concert is presented by the Lincoln County Cultural Trust, Oregon Coast Bank and the Three Rivers Foundation.
