NEWPORT — The annual Agate Beach Surf Classic that will take place Sept. 6-8 is expected to draw scores of amateur surfers from Lincoln County and around Oregon for great waves and big prizes.
The event is a unique partnership between Newport city government, local surf shops and other businesses, according to sports program supervisor Mike Cavanaugh.
“It is a one-of-a-kind event on the Pacific Northwest coast,” he said, adding there will be music, food and a beer garden throughout both days.
Packet pickup is on Friday evening, Sept. 6, at Ossie's Surf Shop. Surfers will compete on Saturday and Sunday at Agate Beach, just south of the Yaquina Head Lighthouse. Competitive heats will start at 8 a.m.
Event pre-registration is $40 online; day of registration is $50 and closes 15 minutes prior to the first heat. Prizes are given to the top three competitors in each division, with an open raffle on Sunday for those that buy tickets during the two-day event.
“We are always in need of volunteers to help with the contest,” Cavanaugh added, saying they will assist with contest setup, registration/information tent and contest teardown. “We will do our best to place you in an area you have requested. If interested, contact us through our website or by phone.”
Among the event’s sponsors are Ossie's Surf Shop, 10 Barrel Brewing Company, the Newport News-Times and Murdey Surfboards, with major support from the Newport Chamber of Commerce.
All proceeds from the event goes towards the youth scholarship program at the Newport Recreation Center, allowing children from economically, disadvantaged households the opportunity to participate in a number of recreation programs.
