Howard was born 83 years ago in Bellingham and grew up in Portland. He lived and worked in the Portland area where he and his first wife, Jean Taynton (deceased), raised their children. In his younger years he spent a lot of time exploring and fishing underwater in scuba gear. He was an active member of an underwater search and rescue team. He and Loris met at their driving club in Portland.
In 1980, Howard and Loris decided to begin their grand adventure and purchased a resort lodge in Montana with another couple, eventually buying them out. Though this was a bit frightening for them, it turned out to be a wonderful and rewarding adventure for them both.
On returning to Oregon 12 years later, Howard and Loris settled in Waldport where Howard became active in community affairs. He worked for a few years for OSU on the Wecoma dock until his retirement.
Howard leaves his wife Loris and three children; Jim Uhl (Heather), Diane Nussbaumer & Jerry Uhl, as well as three granddaughter and two great-grandchildren. He also claimed his three step kids; David Forest (Phyllis), Morgan Forest Colmenero and Steve Forest, five step grandchildren and seven step great grandkids.
A wake will be held for Howard aboard the Discovery at Marine Discovery Tours on Newport’s Bayfront July 13th 5:30-7:30PM; any friends who would like to say a final farewell are welcome to come on Howard's final cruise.
