Honoring Avamere Rehabilitation

Staff from Sea Aire Assisted Living in Yachats and Oceanview Senior Living in South Beach gathered outside Avamere Rehabilitation of Newport on Thursday morning to congratulate the skilled nursing facility for successfully weathering a COVID-19 outbreak last month. The group cheered, deployed party-favor noisemakers and finished with an adapted chorus from Queen’s “We are the Champions” (replacing “we” with “you”), while Avamere staff looked on from just in front of the building’s entrance. Robin Allen, Sea Aire’s administrator, said, “They had a battle with COVID, and they did a great job of getting it out of their building as quickly as they could. They did a great job isolating. They’re awesome. They’re heroes.” Avamere reported a coronavirus outbreak in the facility the last week of June, which eventually spread to 25 residents and 16 staff members. On July 27, the Oregon Department of Human Services lifted an admission restriction at the care home, as there were no more active cases in the building. Seven of the residents who tested positive died, though it’s not certain to what extent the virus contributed to those deaths, given the fragile condition of many of Avamere’s residents.
