In a two-week Pedestal Spotlight Show from Aug. 24 to Sept. 6, the Yaquina Art Association will be featuring the glasswork of Mary Young.

The Yaquina Art Association Gallery is located at 789 NW Beach Drive in Newport. Gallery hours are from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day until Sept. 2. After Labor Day, hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Young has been creating fused glass art for 12 years. She says the constant surprises, playing with color and making happy things are the best part of glass projects. This interest in glass started with her father, who bought a kiln to experiment with years ago. It just took off from there, exploring, trying new techniques and just playing around.

Young has lived in Newport for 13 years. She grew up in Seattle and lived in Portland before moving to the Oregon coast. She has been a member of the Yaquina Art Association since 2007.

Under the name Whimsy Art Glass, Young sells her glasswork at the Newport Farmer’s Market. Her work can also be found in the Itinerant Artist's Marketplace at the Lincoln City Outlets.
