Raymond “Ray” E. Ayers

1926 – 2017

Raymond “Ray” E. Ayers, age 90, passed away January Sunday, January 8, 2017 at Salem Hospital with his wife and daughter holding his hand.

Ray was born in Lacomb, Oregon in 1926 to Elmer and Sophie Ayers. His early years were spent in Lacomb, and he graduated from Lebanon High School in 1945. He then attended Oregon State University for 2 years studying Forestry. He loved to tell the story of marrying the “girl next door” Laura Inez Powell. They celebrated their 68th anniversary in September 2016, a very happy and contented life. He went to work for Hammond Lumber Co. in Lacomb in 1946. When Hammond sold to Georgia Pacific in 1958, they moved to Newport, Oregon. He worked out of the Toledo Office for 47 years. He loved to say “I had the best job in the world”. While in Lebanon, Chiane and Cherie were born. Ray retired in 1994 and they moved to Keizer, Oregon to be closer to their daughter in Portland. In 2014, his health began to fail, so they moved to Willamette Retirement Community.

Ray was preceded in death by his daughter Cherie in 1980. He is survived by his wife Laura Inez; daughter Chiane (Bob) Binford; grandsons: Aaron and Jason (Rebecca) Binford; and great grandchildren: Jozef and Abigail; sisters: Doris Moore and Sharon (Larry) Arnold.

Ray was a member of the Rolling Hills Baptist Church in Salem. A private family burial service will be held. Assisting the family is Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
