NEWPORT — Former Newport airport manager Dennis Reno agreed not to apply for city employment in the future when his lawsuit against the city was settled in December 2012, but that doesn’t mean he can’t run for city council.
Reno, and retired business owner Wendy Engler filed Tuesday on the last day of the filing period to increase the number of candidates to six for three open council seats for the Nov. 4 general election. The filing deadline was 5 p.m.
Engler and Reno, who was fired by the city in 2009, join sitting council members David Allen, Dick Beemer and Mark Saelens, and former mayor and council member Bill Bain.
Reno wrote in an email that he decided to run because he loves Newport.
“I have lived in this wonderful city for about 20 years and see a need to give back to the same in the form of serving citizens as a councilor. I have worked on a number of committees and as a staff administrator in the best and worst scenarios. I feel as though I can make a positive difference,” he said.
