Optimism abounds at coastal economic summit

FLORENCE When coastal residents observe and withstand the personal and commercial hardships of this recession, they may hesitate to buy into a vision of a better future on the horizon.

But the messages of optimism and opportunity for the region were abundant last week, delivered by dozens of government, tribal, university, business and other dignitaries attending an economic summit convened on the central coast.

It was the third annual Oregon Coast Economic Summit of the Oregon Coastal Caucus, held Aug. 20 and 21 at the Three Rivers Casino and Hotel in Florence, and the roster of attendees and speakers included Cylvia Hayes, First Lady of Oregon; senators and representatives from across the state; Bureau of Labor Industries Commissioner Brad Avakian; Oregon State University Dr. Edward Ray; State Economist Mark McMullen; and Chief Justice of the Oregon Supreme Court Paul DeMuniz, to name only a few.
