Berry bows out

Modified: Thursday, Aug 21st, 2014

DEPOE BAY — First-time officeholder Brent Berry, who ran against “the system” when he upset an incumbent city councilor two years ago, has withdrawn from the race for another term.

“I made my point,” said Berry, who was inspired to run when a previous city council rejected him for a vacant seat that he felt he earned in an earlier write-in election. “I ran because they threw away 217 votes. Their message was, ‘your vote doesn’t count.’”

But for two years, Berry’s ballot has counted as the swing vote on the otherwise sharply divided city council.

“There was a lot of drama where there didn’t have to be,” said Berry, at 48 the youngest member of the city council. “I guess I’m just as guilty as everyone else.”

On Wednesday, after collecting a handful of petition signatures, he announced he would not seek reelection.
