NEWPORT — The musical chairs involving the city of Newport’s mayoral and council positions continues.

Dean Sawyer, a Newport City Council member since January 2011, announced his candidacy for mayor in the Nov. 4 general election.

Mayor Sandy Roumagoux, who vacated her council seat in January 2013 after being elected mayor, filed for re-election in June.

The filing deadline for city council and mayor in the November election is Tuesday, Aug. 26.

Sawyer, who worked as a Newport police officer and supervisor for 30 years, was appointed to the council four years ago to replace Mark McConnell, a council member who had been elected mayor. Sawyer was elected to the council in November 2012 for a four-year term.
