NEWPORT — Joyce Lindner raised six children, so she knows how tough it can be to get children ready for school when each has a list of supplies they need for class.

It’s why she wanted to help “Stuff the Bus” by donating notebooks.

For nearly a decade, Yaquina Bay Communications has collected items such as paper, crayons, permanent markers, pens, erasers and glue – the essentials – to hand out to students in need. This year, United Way of Lincoln County joined in on the effort.

It’s a cause that “takes the whole community,” said Larry Blair, sales manager for Yaquina Bay Communications.

They do the event year after year, he added, because many Lincoln County residents are below the poverty level. According to 2010 Census data, 11.6 percent of families in Lincoln County live below the poverty line.

“It’s difficult for these people to get their kids ready for school,” Blair said.
