WALDPORT — Carol and Sherman Beckham were deeply disturbed when they recently found a number of seagulls with darts lodged in their bodies throughout Waldport.

The couple said they noticed a large dart with white parts on the end of it sticking out of a seagull in mid-June.

“It was about 12 inches long,” Sherman said.

They were able to remove the dart from the bird and turned it over to the U.S. Forest Service Ranger Station in Waldport.

“We explained that this wasn’t the first dart (in a seagull) that we were aware of,” Sherman said.

They noticed another darted seagull near the Salty Dawg Bar & Grill at the Port of Alsea.

“The seagulls hang out down by the Salty Dawg and the crab cleaning station (at the port), and there are people with this disgusted look on their face because there are seagulls down there with darts in them,” Carol said.
