SILETZ — As the afternoon wanes to evening, some teens are sitting down to dinner or planning an evening at the beach with their friends. For Siletz football players, though, it’s time to go to work.

The Warriors’ annual preseason football camp has always been an evening affair, head coach Reggie Butler Jr. said, for a variety of reasons.

“We usually do it later so it will cool down a little bit,” he said. “Some of the kids work, so we try to make it around their schedule, have them be done with work before they come to practice.”

The cooler air is certainly a blessing for the players, as much of the program’s focus is on conditioning.

“We’re just doing basic stuff, getting their foot movement down, going over defense … getting their bodies working back towards football shape and mentality,” Butler said. “I saw some of them breathing hard in our first drill – we’ve got to get them back into football shape. Some of them have been running a lot, but slow jogging is a little bit different than quick speed.”
