NEWPORT — It’s not that odd to see high school basketball coaches and players working together on fundamentals in the middle of the summer. But for the staff and players of Newport High School’s boys and girls programs, they weren’t there to improve their own games, they were working to build the skills of their successors.

This year’s annual summer basketball camp, hosted at the Newport Recreation Center by the parks and rec department, is the first to be managed by Newport coaches. Josh Beaudry, the Cub’s interim boys basketball head coach, and a number of high school players from both the girls and boys teams were on hand to help teach more than 70 young players – divided into two age-group sessions – the basics of the game.

“Mainly, it’s fundamentals. We’re working on jump stop to triple threats, we’re working on a lot of ball handling, some of our ‘Pistol Pete’ Maravich drills, dribbling drills,” Beaudry said. “We’re trying to teach them some basic form so they can be shooters, good defensive footwork. A lot of basics, breaking things down.”
