NEWPORT — Historically, Aug. 7 has been designated as National Lighthouse Day.

Newport is one of the unique locations along the West Coast to boast not one, but two historical lighthouses — Yaquina Bay Lighthouse and Yaquina Head Lighthouse.

“There’s been a big movement lately to reinstate National Lighthouse Day by the United States Lighthouse Society, on Aug. 7, in perpetuity,” said Lauren Craven, the executive director of Friends of Yaquina Lighthouses. “We always celebrate it on Aug. 7 every year.”

She added the Newport community is very fortunate to have two significant historical landmarks in such a small area, and benefits from the visitors the lighthouses bring to the area as well as the benefits they bring to the local economy.

Friends of Yaquina Lighthouses celebrated locally by offering special after-hours tours of Yaquina Bay Lighthouse Thursday evening.
