NEWPORT —The Newport Fire Department teamed up with REACH Air Medical Services for a joint training session Wednesday evening.

The fire department, along with Pacific West Ambulance, the city of Newport Parks and Recreation Department, Newport Police Department and Depoe Bay Fire District, conducted helicopter landing zone operations training.

A marine layer of fog that came in the night before cleared up enough to allow for a REACH crew to land an air ambulance helicopter at Betty Wheeler Memorial Field as planned.

“They were able to land their helicopter. The weather cooperated, and we were able to conduct the training safely,” said Todd Jackson, a firefighter, paramedic and the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) coordinator with the Newport Fire Department.
