NEWPORT — Spencer Nebel made it clear Tuesday that during his seven months as Newport city manager, he hasn’t been ignoring the managerial mess that has plagued the city-owned municipal airport.

As the de facto manager of the airport, he interviewed 16 airport stakeholders over several weeks in order to compile a draft report that may eventually help produce an operations plan to rectify what he considers a deteriorating situation.

He presented the report to the Newport Airport Committee, which he asked to participate in the development of his final report to the city council – possibly during its Sept. 15 meeting.

“Operations involving everyone at the airport have been turbulent,” he said. “We’ve all known that backdrop for some time, and I don’t want to focus on picking winners or losers. We need to recognize that we’ve gone through a rough stretch, and we need to more constructively deal with the issues.”
