NEWPORT — After three months of vetting local regulations of medical marijuana dispensaries in Newport, the city council is expected to vote on a resolution Monday evening that would repeal a temporary moratorium by establishing such facilities.

If approved, the resolution would become effective on Aug. 20. The proposal has been considered by the city’s police department, council, planning commission and a business license task force. The ordinance includes several requirements for owners of such facilities, including criminal background checks of personnel responsible for the facility and its employees.

Ordinance No. 2069, would allow a facility with an Oregon Health Authority endorsement to sell medical marijuana in accordance with state law, but does not constitute a waiver of any law imposed any federal, state or local entity. It also will not require any specific liability insurance by the city as part of the business license.
